Roseanne helped John Goodman to stop drinking

She helped him overcome his alcohol addiction.

Roseann Barr had confronted John Goodman about his drinking problem during the original production of Roseanne, as reported by Page Six.

Barr and Goodman starred as a married couple on the hit television series.

Goodman candidly spoke about his alcohol addiction when he and Barr were guests on Howard Stern's SiriusXM talk show.

"She was scared for me, but she was more confrontational. She'd already had a husband go through the process," Goodman said.

Barr's husband at the time, Tom Arnold, also struggled with a painkiller addiction.

The actress said her friendship with Goodman went beyond the set.

"Me and John, we have a friendship off the show, too. John has held my head when I was barfing in a bar. I drank too much, too," Barr said.

She joked that she still drinks to this day, unlike Goodman.

The actor said he has been sober for eight years. His drinking problem, he said, worsened during his last four years on the show.

He was drinking at work and Barr felt scared for him. "I was ashamed of myself, but I couldn't stop," he said.

Barr won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her performance on Roseanne, which aired from 1988 to 1997.

Roseanne will make a return in 2018 with eight episodes.

In the eight years preceding to the Roseanne sitcom, Barr had projected a "fierce working-class domestic goddess" persona. She had wanted to do a show about a strong mother who resists patriarchal consumerism.

After the sitcom ended in 1997, Barr launched her own talk show, The Roseanne Show, which aired from 1998 to 2000.

She also starred in an unscripted TV show, Roseanne's Nuts, in 2011. The show, which was about her life on a Hawaiian farm, lasted from July to September of that year.
